Occult Book Review – The Occult Book: A Chronological Journey from Alchemy to Wicca” by John Michael Greer

I recently received a copy of, “The Occult Book: A Chronological Journey from Alchemy to Wicca” by John Michael Greer.

This is a nice hardcover, well-constructed, attractive book with golden embedded text. I was really impressed with the work that went into the creation and publication of this book.

“The Occult Book: A Chronological Journey from Alchemy to Wicca” is a chronological history of Occultism, Alchemy and Wicca starting from 6th century BCE “Pythagoras Comes to Crotona” to 2012 “The End of the Thirteenth Baktun”.

This book is full of nice artwork and images. It starts out with a great quote from H.P. Blavatsky;

“The world is not prepared yet to understand the philosophy of Occult Sciences – let them assure themselves first of all that there are beings in an invisible world, whether ‘Spirits’ of the dead or Elementals; and that there are hidden powers in man, which are capable of making a God of him on earth.”

Being a member of an old school Theosophy lodge for many years, I really appreciated Mr. Greer’s use of this quote and think it’s perfect for this book.

“The Occult Book: A Chronological Journey from Alchemy to Wicca” has a simple to read four page introduction on occultism and it’s various parts like magic, alchemy, mysticism etc. Like the rest of the book it’s very brief, makes its point and moves on.

The rest of the book, Mr. Greer’s Chronological Journey is a nice drawing or picture on one page and the date and some text about the subject on the opposite page. There is also a see also, at the bottom of each page giving you more information to look up for further study, along with some text describing the picture on the opposite page.

If your new to occultism then this is the perfect book to start with because you get a very good detailed history of the esoteric and occultism. I don’t know a lot about Wicca and enjoyed it being added so I could learn more about it. Even if you’re an old school occultist, I think you will really enjoy this book and it can act as a nice reference and chronological history book for your library.

For those of you looking to go deep and love to bend your mind with long complicated occult or esoteric books then this is not something you will probably enjoy but for me those days are long gone in this world of information overload.

I have an excellent knowledge of occult history and I learned a lot of things from reading this book and following the further study see also references. At the end of the book there is also a Notes and References Section which includes each date and subject, along with the book or books the material in this book came for further study.

John Michael Greer is an outstanding, well respected occultist, writer and occult historian. He has really put together a nice book that is worthy of any occultists library and in a day and age where time is something not a lot of us have, this books simplicity is really appreciated.

Well done and I highly recommend “The Occult Book: A Chronological Journey from Alchemy to Wicca” by John Michael Greer and I would get the physical book and not the Kindle.
